Research Policies and Fees

IMPORTANT NOTICE: While the Madison Public Library is closed for renovations, starting November 2023, we will be working remotely. Please follow the guidance below for remote assistance. 

TOPICS

As a community service, especially to authors, scholars, students, historians, genealogists, builders, building researchers and the curious, our volunteers provide independent research services and customer assistance both in-person and remotely. People, places, things, events, arts, culture and ideas are all topics of interest and the information we gather together increases our common knowledge about Madison.  

IN PERSON ASSISTANCE: WHEN AND WHERE

Our office in the Madison Public Library is open for walk-ins every Tuesday from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. It is also open by advance appointment whenever the Madison Public Library is open. Contact us to arrange a time.

REMOTE ASSISTANCE

Anyone who cannot join us in-person can reach us by regular mail, email, or telephone to start the research process. Please tell us what you are looking for and what you already know. 

RIGHTS RESERVED

We reserve the right to refuse requests for research access and assistance and for copies of materials. Requests for publication, re-use, or changes in use must be submitted in writing. Publication applies to the use of a reproduction in print, film, video or digital format. Permission granted to publish is for a one-time use only, with no other rights. All publications must include the following credit: “From the collections of the Madison Historical Society, Madison, New Jersey.” Electronic reproduction and distribution of images on the internet or on digital media is prohibited without our prior consent.

FEES FOR RESEARCH AND COPIES

1) If you do your own research in our facility, we do not charge a research fee. If we provide research services to you, as in the case of remote assistance, the first hour is free and subsequent hours are charged at $5 per hour.

2) Photocopies of documents are $0.15 per page. 

3) Copies of pictures are for one-time use only. If receiving by digital transfer or email, the cost per picture is $15 for our members and $20 for non-members. If we are asked to make a copy of the picture, the actual cost is billed. 

4) The cost of postage is added to all orders to be mailed. 

5) All orders must be paid in advance.
